First look at the Baha 5 SuperPower

Last year we had the pleasure to visit Mrs Doreen Milne in Manchester, UK. Mrs Milne is a lovely energetic lady who keeps busy together with her husband, friends, children and grandchildren.

She goes to the gym three times a week and travels abroad with husband Derek at least twice a year. Their favourite holiday destination is Cyprus where they have a small house so the whole family can visit.

Doreen has a severe hearing loss. For the last couple of years she’s used the powerful Baha Cordelle II sound processors, designed for people with moderate to severe mixed hearing loss.

“They’re absolutely wonderful,” says Doreen. “Because without them I wouldn’t be able to communicate because I never learned sign language or to lipread.”

As much as they do help Doreen in her daily life, the body-worn sound processors do feel a bit clumsy. Putting them on in the morning, cables and all, take a good ten minutes.

“And if I go to the gym and then take a shower, I’ll have to take them all off and then put them on again. It’s a nuisance! I would love something a bit a more discreet that I could wear in my pocket.”

Watch Doreen’s reaction when we showed her the new Baha 5 SuperPower Sound Processor:

Cochlear introduces the smart head-worn Baha 5 SuperPower sound processor

We are happy to announce the global approval of the Cochlear Baha 5 SuperPower Sound Processor!

This is the first and only head-worn “bone conduction sound processor” designed for moderate to severe mixed hearing loss. It has a fitting range up to 65 dB SNHL (the yellow/orange part of this audiogram).

People with this degree of hearing loss often struggle more than most to hear and understand speech, especially in noisy situations. Today, the body-worn Baha Cordelle II is the only super power sound processor on the market. Since its introduction in 1999 though, technology has moved forward with digital signal processing and smart features like wireless connectivity.

The Baha 5 SuperPower comes equipped with the same True Wireless™ connectivity; Bluetooth Smart; Made for iPhone technology and advanced signal processing as the industry-leading Baha 5 Sound Processor!

It is regulatory approved in the European Union, the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. A number of selected clinics in Europe have begun to fit patients.

“Patient response has been extremely positive,” says Mats Dotevall, Director of Design & Development, Cochlear Bone Anchored Solutions AB. “Early results from the first fittings in European clinics show very positive outcomes and great patient satisfaction in terms of loudness, speech understanding, sound quality and wireless functionality.”

The Baha 5 SuperPower combines both Baha bone conduction and Nucleus (a cochlear impant system) technologies in one ground breaking new device. What’s really exciting about this product is the new Baha EveryWear™ wearing options (that includes a body-worn configuration). This flexible solution means that people who can’t use an ear-level device can still use the Baha 5 SuperPower.

The SuperPower can be worn either on the head…

… or the body, depending on your needs or preferences.

“Innovation is at the forefront of what we do,” says Rom Mendel, General Manager, Cochlear Bone Anchored Solutions AB. “We constantly strive to think differently so we can provide cutting edge technology to help those who need it most. The fact that we are able to leverage our broad range of world-leading hearing solutions to meet the needs of a struggling patient population is very rewarding.”

Although the Baha 5 SuperPower is regulatory approved in many countries, full commercial availability is expected this summer.

Which is Cochlear’s most powerful sound processor?

QuestionI have had my Baha Intenso since February 2009. My hearing has deteriorated since then, therefore I have set it to max which causes it to whistle. Do you have a more powerful model to replace mine? //Brenda

Answer: Hi Brenda. Cochlear does offer a body worn sound processor that provides more audibility than the Intenso, it’s called the Baha Cordelle II. It is currently the most powerful sound processor in our portfolio.

Please discuss with your health care professional if you are eligible for an upgrade.
