Baha 5 sound processors are tamper-proof for your child’s safety

Are you a parent or caregiver to a child with a Baha 5 System? Here are some tips on how to handle the battery door in your child’s sound processor!

All Baha 5 sound processors are equipped with tamper-proof features to prevent accidents from happening. Batteries, for instance can be very harmful if swallowed. You can rest assured that Cochlear has taken great measures to prevent your child from being able to open the Baha sound processor and taking out the battery.

It’s very important however that you check the sound processor on a daily basis to make sure that everything is working correctly.

The Baha 5 Sound Processor has an optional tamper-proof battery door specifically designed for children.

To unlock the sound processor, carefully insert the tip of a pen in the small hole on the tamper-proof battery door and gently open the battery compartment. To lock the device, simply close the battery compartment until it is completely closed.

You must feel two clicks when you close it – if not, you should replace the door immediately. If the little “pin” (circled in red) is broken, the tamper-proof door won’t function as designed, and there is a risk your battery-door-pinchild could open the door. Contact your local Cochlear representative to order extra tamper-proof battery doors.

Tip: Make it a habit that every time you change the sound processor battery or start the device, to make sure the door is firmly locked by lightly trying to open it – to test that the tamper-proof is functioning.

The Baha 5 Power and the Baha 5 SuperPower sound processors have a built-in locking mechanism in their battery doors. You lock and unlock it using the tamper-proof tool provided in the sound processor box.

To lock the battery door, as shown in this instructional video, place the locking tool into the battery door slot. Slide the locking pin up into place. To unlock, slide the locking pin down into place and gently open the battery compartment.

Should the battery door break, you can change it yourself, like this.

What to do?

If your child still somehow should manage to swallow a battery, contact your hospital emergency department immediately. Don’t try to make him or her throw up, and avoid food and drink.

Not sure? Warning signs that a child has swallowed a battery include: excess dribbling, trouble swallowing, vomiting, coughing, choking, and unexplained chest infection.

The best things in life are sweet

How sweet is this?

Baha 5 user Marisa from Mallorca, Spain, shared these cute marzipan sweets in the shape of a Baha 5 SuperPower and a Baha 5 Power, with our Spanish friends.

Something to start practicing on for the holidays?

Parents of young Baha 5 SuperPower user Molly: “The difference in such a short time is amazing!”

In March 2016, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cleared the Baha 5 SuperPower Sound Processor for use in the United States, and Tufts Medical Center is one of the centers now offering the state-of-the-art technology.

One of the first patients fitted with the Baha 5 SuperPower  is young Molly. Her parents share:

“We just wanted to send you a quick update on Molly and her new hearing aid. She loves it and wears it all day! We have seen a huge difference in Molly since she started wearing the new one last one week. She is more vocal, more attentive, more engaged, and can definitely hear better. She even stopped and looked—while she was watching TV—when she heard a knock on the door. We have never seen her do this before!

Molly also sat on the couch and watched a DVD on TV while sitting next to Kaitlyn {her sister}. The microphone was connected to the TV, and she was very attentive and laughed and swayed when familiar songs came on like “Wheels on the Bus.” She sat next to Kaitlyn for about half an hour, which is something she has never done before for that long, and then they looked at books together. Normally she has to sit in a booster chair on a dining room chair closer to the TV and separate from Kaitlyn and the rest of us.

School has also seen a difference in Molly, as she has been more engaged, more aware, and making lots of vocalizations!! The difference in such a short time is amazing.”

The Baha 5 SuperPower is the first and only behind-the-ear bone conduction sound processor, and users around the world report improved hearing and speech understanding, especially in noisy situations.

In the news: Surgeons recommend the Baha 5 SuperPower

From Consumer’s DigestDr. Eric Smouha (pictured), director of otology at Mount Sinai Hospital, and Michael Scott, auditory implant program coordinator at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, are among the prestigious surgeons who recommend the Baha 5 SuperPower to their hard of hearing patients.

Both believe that the product will provide a better quality of hearing than [patients] would [receive] with a conventional hearing aid. Dr. Smouha states that the technology that’s in the systems that lack a body-worn module wasn’t strong enough to address higher degrees of mixed hearing loss.

The SuperPower is the first and only head-worn bone conduction sound processor designed for moderate to severe mixed hearing loss, with a fitting range up to 65 dB SNHL. Thanks to the Baha EveryWear™ wearing options (that includes a body-worn configuration), people who can’t use an ear-level device can still use the Baha 5 SuperPower.

Jim’s new super power!

Jim and Anne have been married for over fifty years, and they’ve lived with Jim’s hearing loss for all that time.

“It can be frustrating for others to have to repeat and repeat what they’ve said, and as a deaf person you tend to just not ask again,” says Jim.

Jim recently upgraded from his Baha Cordelle II to the new Baha 5 SuperPower Sound Processor and he couldn’t be happier.

“I’m more in the conversation than I was before, so it’s a benefit all around, for my family as well,” he continues.

Anne’s happy with the upgrade too, and has seen Jim’s, and even her own, quality of life improve. “When we were in the car, and I’d say something as simple as “yes Jim, we need to turn left here” and I’d have to say that two or three times, whereas now we just have a conversation like normal people,” Anne explains.

Jim’s new Baha 5 SuperPower gives him access to True Wireless technology so he’s able to enjoy listening to the football or the cricket at the same time he’s gardening, something he’s very pleased with, “I can switch the SuperPower to wireless and the reception is just incredible,” Jim explains.

First look at the Baha 5 SuperPower

Last year we had the pleasure to visit Mrs Doreen Milne in Manchester, UK. Mrs Milne is a lovely energetic lady who keeps busy together with her husband, friends, children and grandchildren.

She goes to the gym three times a week and travels abroad with husband Derek at least twice a year. Their favourite holiday destination is Cyprus where they have a small house so the whole family can visit.

Doreen has a severe hearing loss. For the last couple of years she’s used the powerful Baha Cordelle II sound processors, designed for people with moderate to severe mixed hearing loss.

“They’re absolutely wonderful,” says Doreen. “Because without them I wouldn’t be able to communicate because I never learned sign language or to lipread.”

As much as they do help Doreen in her daily life, the body-worn sound processors do feel a bit clumsy. Putting them on in the morning, cables and all, take a good ten minutes.

“And if I go to the gym and then take a shower, I’ll have to take them all off and then put them on again. It’s a nuisance! I would love something a bit a more discreet that I could wear in my pocket.”

Watch Doreen’s reaction when we showed her the new Baha 5 SuperPower Sound Processor:

The Baha 5 Family powers up!

In 2015, Cochlear launched the Baha 5 Sound Processor. With True Wireless sound streaming and Made for iPhone technology, it is the smallest and smartest sound processor in the industry.

However, we also wanted to give these benefits to people with greater hearing losses. So we took the small and smart – and made it more powerful with two new options: Baha 5 SuperPower and the all new Baha 5 Power Sound Processor.

The Baha System is now the only bone conduction system to offer three head-worn sound processors, each one designed to meet different levels of hearing loss and individual preferences.

“Incredibly small” is what many people say when they first see the Baha 5 Sound Processor. And it’s true. The award winning Baha 5 is 20% smaller than all other comparable sound processors – yet full of the most advanced hearing technologies.

The Baha 5 SuperPower was regulatory approved in several countries earlier this year. It’s the first head-worn super power sound processor in bone conduction. Usually worn behind the ear, it also offers other wearing options designed to fit your unique needs and lifestyle.

And finally – the new amazingly smart power sound processor, the Baha 5 Power, which gives you the amplification you need in every listening environment. Like the other two, it’s compatible with the unique Bluetooth® technology designed by Apple, and is a Made for iPhone Hearing Device that let you stream sound directly from iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

The Baha 5 sound processors can connect to a range of wireless accessories. The True Wireless range of devices let you watch TV without disturbing others, help you hear speech in noisy or crowded environments and can connect you to all types of electronic devices. The direct-to-device connections between each accessory and your sound processor have one thing in common – there are no strings attached.
